Wine QR Codes: Provenance and Transparency for Consumers

The wine QR code is no longer a nice-to-have — for wine sold in the EU, it is now a legitimate route for ingredient and nutrition disclosure that became mandatory from December 2023. For small producers and home winemakers, it's also a powerful marketing tool and a bridge between the physical bottle and digital information about how the wine was made.

The Regulatory Driver

EU Delegated Regulation 2021/2117 (amending the Common Market Organisation regulation for wine) introduced significant changes to wine labelling effective December 8, 2023:

  • Ingredient list must be disclosed. It can appear on the label or via an electronic label (QR code).
  • Nutritional information must be disclosed. The energy value must be on the physical label; other nutritional data (fat, carbohydrates, protein, salt) can be via QR code.
  • The QR code must link to a stable, permanent URL that displays information in the official language(s) of the destination EU market.
  • The linked page must only contain the required label information — no marketing, promotions, or tracking (though these can be on a separate linked page from the main information).

For winemakers selling into the EU (including UK winemakers exporting post-Brexit), this is now a compliance requirement, not an optional feature.

What to Include in a QR Code Wine Page

Mandatory (for EU compliance)

  1. Ingredient list — all inputs that are present in the final wine above de minimis levels:

    • Grapes (variety if desired)
    • Sulphites ("contains sulphites" if above 10 mg/L)
    • Fining agents if they may be present as allergens: egg, milk (casein), fish (isinglass) — or "None" if not used
    • Any added yeast, nutrients, acids, sugars — in ingredient format
    • MLF bacteria (optional but good practice)
  2. Nutritional information (per 100mL):

    • Energy (kJ/kcal) — must be on physical label too
    • Fat (g) and saturated fat (g)
    • Carbohydrates (g) and sugars (g) — residual sugar
    • Protein (g)
    • Salt (g)

Typical values for dry red wine (per 100mL):

  • Energy: 343 kJ / 82 kcal
  • Fat: 0g
  • Carbohydrates: 2.6g (of which sugars: 0.6g)
  • Protein: 0.1g
  • Salt: 0g

These vary by ABV and residual sugar. Use published EU reference values or have the wine chemically analysed for precision.

Value-adding (beyond compliance)

A great QR code wine page goes beyond the minimum:

  1. Provenance story — vintage, vineyard or fruit source, region, elevation, soil type
  2. Winemaking notes — fermentation method, oak treatment, ageing duration, yeast strain
  3. Harvest data — Brix at picking, pH, TA
  4. Lot number explanation — what the lot number means for this wine
  5. Pairings — food matching suggestions
  6. Producer profile — short bio, other wines, contact / social links
  7. Digital signature / verification — optional but growing: cryptographic proof of authenticity

The MakeWine Public Wine Page

MakeWine's /w/[id] and /p/[token] pages are designed specifically to serve this function:

  • /w/[id]: Basic public wine profile — available without provenance. Shows variety, category, vintage, producer.
  • /p/[token]: Full provenance page — shows fermentation journey, lot information, additions log, bottling details, maker profile, ECDSA digital signature badge.

A QR code printed on the label linking to /p/[token] satisfies the EU digital label requirement for ingredient/nutrition (when the page is populated) and provides full consumer transparency.

Generating and Printing QR Codes

QR codes encode a URL. The /label designer in MakeWine generates the correct QR code automatically when a provenance record exists — the QR encodes /p/[token] for the specific bottle's provenance.

Size requirements:

  • Minimum: 1cm × 1cm on the physical label (smaller is unreadable by many phone cameras)
  • Recommended: 2cm × 2cm or larger
  • Error correction level: Q or H (higher redundancy for labels that may get wet or worn)
  • Format: black on white or high-contrast equivalent; avoid coloured QR codes on dark backgrounds

Testing: Always test your QR code with multiple devices before printing. Use Android and iOS; use cameras in poor light. If it fails, increase size or contrast.

Best Practice for Small Producers

Static URL: Never put a redirect-shortened URL in the QR code. Use the full permanent URL to your wine page. If you ever change the URL structure, existing QR codes become broken links on printed labels.

Permanent hosting: The EU requires the URL to be permanently accessible. Cloud hosting (not a home server) with reliable uptime is essential.

Multi-language: For EU compliance, the page must be in the language of the market it's sold in, or offer a language selector. If selling in France, the page must be accessible in French.

Mobile-optimised: The overwhelming majority of consumers will view this on a phone. The page must load quickly on mobile, display correctly on small screens, and require no zooming.

Consumer Engagement Beyond Compliance

For direct-to-consumer winemakers, the QR code represents a rare opportunity: a physical touchpoint (the label) that leads directly to a digital relationship with the consumer.

Beyond regulatory compliance, well-implemented wine QR codes can:

  • Link to a newsletter sign-up for the winery
  • Show current vintage availability for direct purchase
  • Allow consumers to rate or review the wine
  • Share the wine on social media
  • Connect to a winery visit booking page

The QR code on the bottle is the bridge between the physical wine experience and a digital relationship that doesn't need to end when the wine is finished.

💡

Tip: Test your QR code URL in multiple browser types and on multiple devices before committing to a label print run. The most frustrating QR code failure is one you discover only after 500 labels are printed.
