Using a Hydrometer

A hydrometer measures the density of your wine relative to water, giving you a specific gravity reading. Accurate gravity readings are essential for tracking fermentation progress and calculating ABV.

How to use

  • Draw a sample into a hydrometer trial jar
  • Lower the hydrometer gently — do not drop it
  • Read the scale at the meniscus (the flat part of the liquid surface)
  • Note the temperature — hydrometers are calibrated at 20°C

Temperature Correction

Corrected SG = Measured SG + 0.00027 × (T°C − 20)

Refractometer

A refractometer only works accurately before fermentation. Alcohol distorts refractometer readings — use a hydrometer for readings during or after fermentation.
